Windows 11's Snipping Tool is set to receive a significant update, introducing the capability to create animated GIFs directly from screen recordings. This enhancement aims to streamline the process of capturing and sharing dynamic content without the need for third-party applications.
The Snipping Tool, traditionally used for capturing static screenshots, expanded its functionality to include screen recording, saving videos in the .MP4 format. Recognizing the widespread use of GIFs for sharing concise, looping animations on social media and messaging platforms, Microsoft is now integrating a GIF creation feature into the tool.
How to Create GIFs with the Updated Snipping Tool:
- Initiate Screen Recording: Press
Win + Shift + R
to open the screen recording interface. - Record Desired Content: Select the area of the screen you wish to capture and start recording.
- Export as GIF: Upon stopping the recording, a preview window will appear with a "GIF" button. Clicking this button allows you to choose between low and high-quality GIF exports.
It's important to note that the GIF export feature is limited to recordings of 30 seconds or less. If a recording exceeds this duration, only the first 30 seconds will be available for GIF export.
This feature is currently available in Snipping Tool version 11.2505.21.0 for users enrolled in the Windows Insider Program's Canary or Dev Channels. For those seeking more advanced GIF creation and editing capabilities, third-party applications like ScreenToGIF offer additional functionalities.
By integrating GIF creation directly into the Snipping Tool, Microsoft aims to enhance user productivity and simplify the process of sharing dynamic content across various platforms.
