Windows 7 System Restore: Less Trustworthy Than XP?

I've never trusted automatic procedures which run in the background when I have little control or knowledge of exactly what they are doing and when they are doing it so I have always turned system restore off completely and take control of my own destiny by making system image backups on a regular basis and also immediately before making any significant changes to my system as in software installs, driver updates, service packs etc. There are many drive image software packages about, both free and to buy; I personally use Acronis True Image.

I haven't been able to get it to restore an existing restore point for quite a while even if I do it all in safe mode let alone the sporadic updates it occasionally creates. I use Acronis and make a fresh image very week or so. It's become a really useless function in the last year or so as far as I'm concerned. I think restoring from Acronis only takes about 8 min anyway.
