Ok the timeline for Windows versions is;
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10
Note that 8.1 is a new system and not just a patch for 8… yes that is retarded but Microsoft doesn't like the number 9 for some reason.
If you have Windows 8 then keep reading but if you only have Windows 7 stop here.
You have something stopping the upgrade and I suspect that is an anti-virus software of some kind so the recommended next step is to try up grading from within Safe Mode… a boot with just the basic Windows functions and nothing else:
1. Plug your system into a cable network because most systems don't have wifi during safe mode.
2. Press [windows key] + [r] and type "msconfig" (
without quotes) then press [enter]
3. This opens the system configuration panel… pick the boot tab, put a tick in the 'safe mode' check box' and then press 'apply' (
don't skip this) then 'ok'
4. A box will pop up asking you to restart now… say yes
This will reboot your system into safe mode as the subtle screens indicate…
...at this point you don't have any 3rd party software and I want you to now try running the upgrade again.
