Windows Vista Windows Explorer shutdown

Hi i think my problem is very common but here it goes.
When i tried to search some files (images or video) it appears a message that the windows explorer is goin to close and it thus i have to do it all over again i did some research and i think it has to do something with "shell extensions" i was like wath it is and how i fix it. i have a laptop vaio vgn sony 32 bit windows vista home basic
