With the computers networks that I install I need all computers to be able to see each other. With XP this is simple. All I need to do is have the same user name and password and workgroup name at each computer. I also create a share on the C drive to all. Then when I go into network places I can see all of the other computers C drives. Now when I add a Win 7 Home premimun in the mix I am stuck. Win 7 wants to tell what kind of connection I have and I can not seem to be able to set it to a open Work type. The computers are not on the internet which Win 7 seems to really not like. Hard time seeing the Win 7 computer from the other XP boxes, networking freezes up.

Is there any way I can Force set the network connection to "Work" and lock it so that it is shared?

Solution
When setting up network sharing between Windows XP and Windows 7 computers, there are some considerations to keep in mind due to the differences in network settings and configurations between these operating systems. Here's how you can ensure that all computers can see each other effectively:

Steps to Enable Network Sharing:

  1. Network Location Setting:
    • Windows 7 categorizes networks into three types: Home, Work, and Public. To ensure seamless network sharing, you can set the network as a "Work" network.
    • Here's how you can change the network location setting to "Work":
      • Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings.
      • Under "Network discovery," select "Turn on...

      • Under "Network discovery," select "Turn on network discovery."
      • Under "File and printer sharing," select "Turn on file and printer sharing."
      • Under "Public folder sharing," select the appropriate option based on your requirements.
      • Select "Save changes."
    []Network Profile Initialization (Win 7):
    • Upon connecting to a network for the first time, Windows 7 will ask you to choose a network type (Home, Work, Public).
    • You can change this setting by going to the Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center and clicking on the network type.
    [
    ]Workgroup Setting:
    • Ensure that all computers are part of the same workgroup.
    • To change the workgroup in Windows 7:
      • Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System.
      • Under "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings," click on "Change settings."
      • Select the "Computer Name" tab, click the "Change" button, enter the workgroup name, and click "OK."
      • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
    []Share Permissions:
    • Make sure you have shared the folders or drives on each computer that you want to access from other computers.
    • Right-click on the folder/drive you want to share, go to Properties > Sharing and configure the required sharing permissions.
    [
    ]Firewall and Antivirus:
    • Temporarily disable the firewall and antivirus software to see if they're causing any network communication issues. If disabling them resolves the problem, configure them to allow file and printer sharing in the network settings. By following these steps and ensuring that the network and sharing settings are correctly configured on both Windows XP and Windows 7 computers, you should be able to establish a stable network connection for seamless file sharing.
