How do I get rid of this little gadget bar at the bottom of the screen (see screen shots below)? It's driving me nuts.
I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, if that helps any.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide to me.

Drew, and to any other Sony VAIO customers that have this issue and want it corrected. That little gadget bar is a total annoyance.
To get rid of the bar, you go to msconfig, such as you and Omegatron suggested.
From there, under the "Startup" tab is a program called "VAIO Mode Switch" manufactured by Sony Corporation. Disable that, and then restart your computer. That will disable the gadget bar.
Certainly, I am not the only person in the world that owns a VAIO, and I'm sure other owners are just as annoyed by it as I was. Hopefully, this will help them out, too.
Drew and Omegatron, thank you for your assitance and attention to my problem. I greatly appreciate it!

hey drew, when i click on the rectangular thing in the corner, all it does is make the tool bar small. i've attached a screen shot.
when i right click on the desktop, it doesn't provide any options that would allow me to remove it.
i have a sony vaio laptop i just bought, and i'm beginning to think it's something specific to my computer. i might have to call their support line to get red of it.
however, i'm still holding out hope that maybe someone on here might know how to get rid of it!
