Windows 7 BSOD after updating CPU

I am experiencing random BSODs - some with references and some without.

The references I have caught are:

system_service_exeption
portclssys
bad_pool_header

These BSODs are really random, sometimes very shortly after booting up and other times I can go hours without a crash.

This started 2 days ago, right after I updated my cpu from an Intel core duo 2 e6600 to an Intel Core 2 Quad 9400.

Motherboard is the same (Asus p5b deluxe) - I have the latest bios which support the Q9400 cpu.

I have enclosed several of my minidumps in the zip file attached to this post.

I wouldo greatly appreciate any help or suggestions.

you have three different bug check strings namely SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION , KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and BAD_POOL_HEADER unfortunately none of them name a driver to blame for the crash and the bugcheck code for the most common one KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED which is 0x3b would suggest hardware.

the driver tdx.sys is mentioned as unable to load the symbol and as this is a driver for your broadcom ethernet NIC i would normally suggest checking for updates but in this case your version

looks like the latest version to me ?

I think it's possible this crashe may actually have been caused by a collision...

I can't read mini-dumps, but there are some who can.

Did you reset the bios defaults after updating the Bios? And you are using the 1238 bios?

I also notice those are Beta bioses...and the 1238 is supposed to "fix system hangs at POST while using certain 4GB memory and CPUs".

Hi Saltgrass, thank you for taking a look at this issue.

Yes, I am using the latest version 1238 and I loaded the default settings; I did notice that the last two bios updates were considered beta, but the q9400 was added to the second to last bios update according to the changelog - which I took as a positive thing.

I am considering doing a fresh install but I really don't want to if I don't have to and it would really suck if the BSODs continued even after the reinstall.

I think it's possible this crashe may actually have been caused by a collision between the ethernet driver tdx.sys and your third party firewall so I suggest you unninstall Norton by symantec, see below* and install Link Removed due to 404 Error and use windows firewall for debugging purposes.

the other thing that occurred to me is did you reset your bios to defaults after installing the new CPU ?

I think it's likely you may have higher power requirements for this CPU so maybe check in the bios what the voltage is set at ?

most importantly you have some old problem drivers on your system

is very old pre dating windows 7 and needs removing or updating, ASACPI.sys belongs to the Asus ATK0110 ACPI Utility (14/05/2009 is i think the latest available)

theres a few logitech drivers there possibly quick cam ?

for the rest a google search should get some results ...............

*I strongly suggest remove Norton completely by uninstalling then finish the job by using the Link Removed

First off - thank you so much for taking a look at this for me.

I think (!) I have the BSOD under control, I did a little bit of everything that you mentioned so I cannot be 100% sure what the actual fix was but if I had to gander, I would guess it was the ASACPI.sys.

I am not using Norton; I use AVG and windows firewall.

I now have another issue now when my system appears to be stable enough (did I mention THANK YOU!?) - it is running slow; in particular when playing video, the sound tends to stutter and the frame rate is lagging.

I have never had any such problems before I upgraded from my Intel core duo e6600 to a way faster processor (Intel corte duo quadro 9400) - every other hardware is the same (just cpu and cpu fan changed).

I even went as far as uninstalling both video and sound drivers and reinstalling them but other than taking an insane amount of time and reboots, it really made no difference.

Any suggestions on how to get things running as they should and not stutter and lagging video and sound?

sorry my bad i thought i saw norton and acronis in there when i was looking at your drivers , but maybe i just need more sleep :tongue:

I am suspicious of the effect AVG is having on your system and would like you to try completely uninstalling it and replacing with MSE ?

I suggest unninstall AVG then unninstall reeboot and reinstall gfx drivers then install MSE ?

let us know how that goes ?
