I have 8.1 and I keep getting a pop-up notification for an Audio System Event saying that a device has been plugged in, then unplugged, over and over, when nothing is plugged into the audio jack. apologies your post was missed. Did you recently upgrade to 8.1 or did it come with the machine? I also did a little Googling on the issue and found this fix for using a Realtek set up (it says audio 'card' but it will work with onboard too):
