Windows Vista Speakers and headphones disabled suddenly

My friend has a HP Pavilion G60 laptop running Vista Home Premium. His speakers and headphones are disabled suddenly. He tried his best to enable them, but had no success. They are not even listed in sound devices. The volume icon says there is no sound device installed. Can’t figure out what else need to do to make them work properly..
Need your help to fix this problem.
