Usually it's not a problem to remove these unused extensions but if you want a little more security most apps offer to make a registry back-up in case anything goes awry.
I use this utility for a 'quick' reg' clean:

It will also offer to create a back-up of your registry but you must tick a check box first...
I've included a screenshot showing the check box in question..
