So I installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview on a spare machine and I'm wondering; What will happen when Windows 10 is released? Will it just stay as a technical preview or upgrade to the full Windows 10? The answer might be pretty obvious, but I was just wondering.

As I understand it, you will have to have some version of Windows (Windows 7 or later) with a legitimate serial number on the computer to upgrade to Windows 10.

I've seen some messages saying that even a rouge copy of Windows 7 will work, but that seems unlikely to me.

But you will have to have some operating system on the computer to get the upgrade.
