Google Chrome can now download on-device generative AI models in the background when a PC has roughly 20GB of free space, an unmetered connection, and what Google calls “sufficient device performance.” But the number being circulated is not a 20GB model download. It is a free-space gate: Google’s documentation does not say how large the downloaded files are, which model version qualifies, or why Chrome requires that much headroom before it begins.

The distinction is more than semantic for Windows users trying to keep a small SSD usable. Independent reporting from Ars Technica and TechSpot in May found Chrome installations carrying a roughly 4GB local model, generally identified as Gemini Nano. Google’s newly expanded Chrome Help documentation confirms that background downloads occur on eligible machines and now puts the minimum free-space threshold at approximately 20GB. It does not establish that Chrome will consume 20GB, nor that it reserves 20GB after a download completes.

Microsoft Edge has a similar 20GB threshold, but it is attached to a much narrower feature than the headline suggests. Microsoft’s Edge documentation says the requirement currently applies to the experimental Prompt API in Edge Canary and Dev, where the local Phi-4-mini model is downloaded after a website or extension invokes an API that requires it. That is a real automatic download path, but it is not a blanket deployment to the stable Edge browser population.

The practical finding is clear: Chrome’s consumer-facing background download policy is broader than Edge’s current developer-preview implementation, while neither vendor’s 20GB requirement should be mistaken for the actual on-disk size of a model.

Google’s Help page says Chrome may download models in the background so AI-backed browser and web features are ready when needed. The listed use cases include writing and rephrasing assistance, scam warnings, web-page summaries, and tab organization. The requirements are an unmetered network connection, approximately 20GB of free disk space, and sufficient performance.

What Google has not published is just as relevant. There is no stated installed model size, no public table of qualifying CPUs, GPUs, RAM levels, Windows versions, Chrome channels, or device-performance tiers, and no retention policy comparable to Edge’s. The page says that device requirements may change over time, giving Google room to alter eligibility without a visible browser setting or a release-note announcement.

That opacity is the main operational concern. A 128GB SSD with 24GB free qualifies under Chrome’s stated storage rule; a machine with 19GB free does not. If the browser downloads about 4GB, as May reporting observed, the first machine may fall rapidly into the low-free-space range that affects Windows servicing, hibernation, application updates, and temporary-file operations. The 20GB threshold appears designed to avoid exactly that situation, but Google provides no stated floor at which it deletes a model later.

Chrome’s documentation does now supply a supported off switch. In Chrome, open Settings > System and turn off On-device AI. Google says doing so deletes the local generative-AI model files and prevents the browser from downloading them again unless the setting is re-enabled. That is materially better than manually deleting files: Google explicitly warns that removing model files by hand may not stop a future download.

The change also settles an important point from the May controversy. At that time, users and researchers who found large

files in Chrome’s local profile data had limited visibility into what was happening and no clear user-facing control. Google’s present documentation admits that the models can be acquired in the background and makes deletion an official function. It still leaves Chrome’s default behavior intact on eligible consumer systems.

Edge’s 20GB rule belongs to a developer preview​

Microsoft’s wording is much more specific. The 20GB free-space requirement applies to the Prompt API developer preview in Edge Canary and Edge Dev, beginning with Edge version 138.0.3309.2. The API exposes a browser-provided small language model to websites and extensions, allowing developers to perform local text-generation and analysis tasks without sending prompts to a cloud service.

Microsoft says the default model is Phi-4-mini, and that Edge downloads it the first time a website calls an API that needs an on-device model. The company also requires Windows 10 or Windows 11, or macOS 13.3 or newer; at least 5.5GB of VRAM; an unlimited or unmetered network connection; and 20GB free on the volume containing the Edge profile.

Those last two details sharply limit the affected Windows hardware. A large share of mainstream integrated-GPU laptops will not meet the stated 5.5GB VRAM requirement for Phi-4-mini. More importantly, ordinary stable-channel Edge installs are not in the documented preview scope. Microsoft’s own Edge developer blog describes the APIs as Canary and Dev previews intended for web developers, not a feature automatically activated for every Windows 11 user.

Microsoft has also documented a storage safeguard that Google has not publicly matched: if available space on the Edge profile volume drops below 10GB, Edge deletes the model to preserve room for browser functions. That means the browser has a defined cleanup threshold, although it does not tell users the download size in the same hardware-requirements section.

There is a second wrinkle. Microsoft has begun testing Aion-1.0-Instruct in Edge Canary and Dev version 150.0.4070 and later. Microsoft calls it smaller, faster, and able to run on less capable GPUs or by CPU inference. Yet the current documentation presents the 20GB free-space rule in the Phi-4-mini section, not as a separate storage profile for Aion. Until Microsoft publishes distinct requirements and rollout details, administrators should not assume that the smaller model means proportionally lower disk thresholds or that it is ready for stable-channel deployment.


The two browsers use different download triggers​

Chrome and Edge are often grouped together because both are Chromium-based, but their documented download behavior is not interchangeable.

Chrome says it may obtain models in the background on an eligible device, including before the user explicitly invokes a particular feature. That approach preloads capability and makes it available to browser functions such as local scam detection or writing assistance. It also means a user may notice a substantial new disk footprint before recognizing that an AI feature is involved.

Edge’s Prompt API model download is tied to a developer-facing web platform API. Microsoft says the initial download occurs when a website or extension first calls an API needing the model. In practice, that creates a different governance problem: an eligible Edge Canary or Dev user can trigger a download through web content or an extension after enabling the preview feature, rather than through an obvious “download model” dialog.

Neither approach promises a traditional installer-style consent prompt. The difference is that Chrome’s documentation describes background readiness as the default behavior for eligible systems, while Microsoft still fences its pathway behind experimental channels, an enabled API flag, and hardware requirements.

Calling both browsers capable of “quietly downloading up to 20GB AI models” therefore compresses three separate facts into one misleading claim:

  • Chrome can perform a background download, but Google describes 20GB as approximate available free space, not the model’s file size.
  • Edge uses the same 20GB free-space threshold, but Microsoft currently documents it for a Canary and Dev developer preview rather than the stable Edge browser.
  • Edge imposes a 5.5GB VRAM requirement for Phi-4-mini and deletes the model if profile-volume free space falls below 10GB; Chrome’s public help page lists neither equivalent detail.

Chrome Enterprise has a control, but consumer defaults remain automatic​

For managed Windows fleets, Google’s Chrome Enterprise policy documentation provides the most consequential detail: the Local foundational model settings policy controls whether Chrome downloads and uses its local generative-AI model. Google lists Download model automatically as the default and offers Do not download model as the administrative alternative.

That policy matters for VDI estates, kiosks, classrooms, branch-office devices, and endpoint pools with thin OS disks. A 4GB payload multiplied across hundreds or thousands of profiles can create a capacity issue even where no individual machine is critically low on space. In profile-container environments, it can also increase logon, roaming, backup, or storage-tiering pressure depending on where Chrome’s profile data is stored.

The setting is not merely about disk consumption. Local models are software components with their own update cadence and eligibility logic. An organization that requires change control should decide whether Chrome’s security and AI features justify automatic acquisition of a sizeable opaque component, rather than discovering it through a storage alert or endpoint inventory scan.

Google notes that enterprise model downloads and usage are subject to Chrome Enterprise policy. The company has not, however, published a consumer-facing equivalent of Edge’s automatic 10GB cleanup threshold, nor has it explained whether model updates temporarily require additional working space beyond the published 20GB admission rule.


What Windows users should do now​

For personal Chrome installations, check Settings > System and decide whether On-device AI is worth the local storage cost. Turning it off is the supported way to remove the model files and block another download. Users should not rely on deleting a file in Chrome’s profile directory, because Chrome says manual removal may not prevent re-download.

For managed Chrome deployments, administrators should review the Local foundational model policy before the next broad browser update cycle. The default is automatic download, so leaving the policy unmanaged is itself a decision to permit local inference components where a device meets Google’s changing eligibility criteria.

For Edge, the immediate risk is concentrated among Canary and Dev users testing the Prompt API. Those users can inspect

to see model status and the device performance class. Stable-channel Edge users should not treat Microsoft’s current Prompt API documentation as evidence that Phi-4-mini is being silently pushed to every Windows 11 PC.

The 20GB number is a warning flag, not a download-size disclosure. Chrome’s policy now makes that clear enough to act on; what remains missing is the information Windows users actually need to predict storage impact before the browser starts fetching local AI components.
