Microsoft Edge has begun its consumer transition away from Manifest V2 extensions, putting the full version of uBlock Origin on a path to being disabled by default before the end of 2026. Firefox seized on the announcement with a blunt social-media message that its uBlock Origin support “isn’t going anywhere,” a response independently reported by PC Gamer and Windows Central after Microsoft published its August 7 migration timetable.

The practical message for Edge users is more important than Mozilla’s victory lap: the full uBlock Origin is not interchangeable with uBlock Origin Lite, and Microsoft has not published a precise Edge version, build number, or day when a given consumer PC will lose Manifest V2 support. Notices started appearing for a subset of users in August, while the default shutoff is to be phased in “over the next few months.”

That leaves time to prepare, but it is not a reason to wait until an extension silently stops working.

Microsoft’s Edge team says it will complete the consumer move away from Manifest V2, or MV2, by the end of 2026. The company says enterprise deprecation follows in early 2027. Beginning this month, some people with MV2 extensions installed will see warnings on edge://extensions and on Edge Add-ons listing pages; developers receive related notices in Microsoft Partner Center.

Microsoft argues that the ecosystem is ready: 95% of its top MV2 extensions have already moved to Manifest V3, or MV3, and it says just 58 MV2 extensions in the Edge Add-ons catalog have “meaningful usage.” Of that group, Microsoft says three lack a publicly available MV3 equivalent.

Those figures support Microsoft’s decision for the large majority of its extension catalog, but they do not resolve the problem for the smaller group of users who picked a particular extension because it does something an MV3 replacement cannot. uBlock Origin is the conspicuous case because it is both widely used and deliberately more capable than the MV3 alternative carrying its name.

Microsoft’s public documentation also exposes an awkward gap in the rollout record. Its updated Manifest V3 timeline lists an August 2026 Partner Center deprecation warning and enterprise action in early 2027, but it does not spell out the announced consumer default-disable schedule or identify Edge builds affected by each stage. The Edge blog has the clearest consumer guidance, yet even that guidance remains a target-based timeline rather than a release-by-release plan.

For administrators and help desks, that means an Edge version number alone is not presently a reliable readiness test. Check the extension inventory in actual user profiles, watch for warnings in edge://extensions, and treat the end of 2026 as a deployment deadline rather than a date when every machine will change simultaneously.


Why uBlock Origin Lite is a different product​

The submitted story correctly identifies the central technical change: Chromium browsers moving from the older blockingWebRequest model to MV3’s declarative network-request model. The difference is not simply an internal API rename.

Full uBlock Origin can apply flexible filtering decisions while requests are being made and offers tools such as advanced dynamic filtering, per-site rules, broader filter syntax, and strict blocking behavior. Its maintainer, Raymond Hill, describes uBlock Origin as a “wide-spectrum blocker,” meaning ads are only part of what it handles; users may also use it to control trackers, scripts, frames, popup behavior, malware domains, and more.

uBlock Origin Lite is an MV3-oriented content blocker designed around declarative rulesets. Hill’s own documentation says it is “too different” from full uBlock Origin to be an automatic replacement. That distinction is especially relevant for people who have built custom rules, depend on per-site controls, use advanced mode, or rely on the extension to deal with sites using anti-blocker tactics.

Lite has continued to gain capabilities. As of its July documentation update, it can support custom filters and external filter subscriptions in a manner intended to preserve its declarative design. It can also provide dependable filtering at browser launch without keeping a background process permanently active. Those are genuine engineering advantages, not merely Microsoft talking points.

But the limitations remain concrete. The uBlock Origin Lite documentation says generic cosmetic filtering is off by default unless a user raises the filtering level to Complete. It also identifies classes of filters and controls that cannot be fully translated into Chromium’s declarative rules system, including some dynamic filtering behavior, response-body modifications, certain regex-based filters, and several kinds of contextual network rules.

For an ordinary user who installed uBlock Origin and never opened its dashboard, Lite may be entirely sufficient. For a power user, calling it a seamless migration is inaccurate. Microsoft promises to direct users to recommended MV3 versions “where available,” but it has not said that Edge will automatically convert a uBlock Origin installation to uBlock Origin Lite. The extension’s maintainer is clear that users should choose their replacement based on their own requirements.

Firefox’s jab rests on a substantive technical difference​

Firefox’s social-media posts were deliberately snarky. PC Gamer reported the Firefox account saying, “Reminder that you can still just… use ad blockers on Firefox. Wild concept, we know,” followed by its assurance that uBlock Origin support would remain. The message was timed to exploit a real browser-platform divide, not merely a marketing opportunity.

Mozilla has publicly committed to supporting MV2 and MV3 side by side for the foreseeable future. Its own Manifest V3 explanation says Firefox will keep supporting both blockingWebRequest and declarativeNetRequest, allowing extension developers to choose between the older, more flexible request-blocking model and the newer declarative approach.

This does not mean Firefox has rejected MV3. Firefox implements MV3 and continues to add APIs intended to help extensions work across browsers. The distinction is that Mozilla has not made its MV3 implementation a forced retirement of MV2 or blockingWebRequest. As a result, the full Firefox build of uBlock Origin can continue operating without being redesigned around Chromium’s MV3 constraints.

Firefox therefore has a defensible message to users who specifically value the full uBlock Origin feature set. It is not the only option, however. Windows Central reports that Brave says it will continue to support uBlock Origin and hosts certain MV2 extensions itself, with an option in its settings for Manifest V2 extensions. That is a separate policy decision by a Chromium-based browser, and users should not assume that every Chromium browser will follow it.

The broader lesson is that “Chromium browser” no longer tells users enough about extension compatibility. Edge, Chrome, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, and other Chromium-based products can make different choices around extension stores, enterprise controls, upstream Chromium changes, and support windows. The browser engine is only one part of the compatibility picture.


Enterprise administrators have a longer runway — and a narrow control​

Microsoft’s published Edge policy documentation gives managed environments more nuance than the consumer announcement. The ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy can control whether MV2 extensions are enabled, disabled, or limited to force-installed extensions. Microsoft says the EnableForForcedExtensions setting remains available regardless of the broader MV2 migration state.

That is a useful operational detail, but it should not be mistaken for an open-ended exemption for every employee-installed extension. Microsoft’s documentation says that configuration permits only force-installed MV2 extensions while disabling other MV2 add-ons. The policy applies to Edge on Windows and macOS, and is supported from Edge version 123 onward.

For an organization with a business-critical MV2 extension, the immediate work is straightforward:

  • Inventory installed and force-installed Edge extensions, including extensions deployed through policies and those used by individual departments without central IT ownership.
  • Identify whether each MV2 extension has an actual MV3 replacement, rather than relying on a similarly named store listing.
  • Test the replacement against the sites, internal applications, authentication flows, and filtering rules employees use in production.
  • Use the force-installed policy only as a temporary continuity control while the vendor migrates or a replacement is approved.

The security tradeoff also deserves plain treatment. Microsoft’s rationale for MV3 centers on security, privacy, and performance. A managed exception may be necessary to prevent a business process from breaking, but it preserves an extension architecture Microsoft is retiring. It should have an owner, a documented justification, and an end date.

Edge users should decide before the warning becomes a disablement​

The most useful response to Firefox’s taunt is not an impulsive browser switch. It is to identify which kind of uBlock Origin user you are.

If the goal is routine ad and tracker filtering with minimal adjustment, uBlock Origin Lite is worth testing now in a separate Edge profile. Check the filtering level, test the sites you use most, and confirm whether advertisements, consent overlays, video interruptions, and site-specific annoyances behave acceptably. Do not install two content blockers side by side; uBlock Origin Lite’s documentation warns against mixing blockers because their rules can interfere with one another.

If you use advanced mode, personal filters, strict blocking, dynamic third-party rules, or a carefully tuned set of exceptions, export or document that configuration now. Then test Firefox with the full uBlock Origin before Edge starts disabling MV2 by default. The key question is whether your workflow depends on full uBlock Origin’s controls, rather than whether a page happens to look ad-free today.

Microsoft’s MV2 cutoff is a platform migration with a relatively small extension count behind it, but one unusually visible casualty. Firefox has found a clean way to turn that exception into a pitch. For Edge users, the consequence is less rhetorical: by December 2026, the choice between staying on Edge with an MV3 blocker and moving to a browser that retains full uBlock Origin support should be an informed decision already made, not a surprise delivered through edge://extensions.
