It was alive under 7048.. now I get a "device can not start error". I tried to install the latest realtek drivers to no avail.

It's an Asus A6VC laptop with ALC880 hardware, I think..
Here's ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0880&SUBSYS_1043020D&REV_1008

EDIT:

I erased everything and did a clean install.. same problem. Audio device can't start. Realtek latest drivers for Vista won't work either.

Did you install the UAA (Universal Audio Architecture) bus driver prior to installing the high definition audio driver? I know for that model in Windows XP you have to have that installed before the audio driver could be installed.. ;) Perhaps the same is true for Windows 7...
