That's actually what I was trying to say. This was rather random before, but now every time I want to burn a CD I need to uninstall the device and then reboot, so that it will re-install. I think this device is pretty much a lost cause. Thanks for trying.

I cleaned it, but did not resolve the issue. No sure what you mean by firmware. I tried to update the driver but it said the best driver was already installed. Here is a new wrinkle. In order to write to the CD, I now have to uninstall and then reinstall the DVD/CD drive every time.

You may very well be right, as I install and uninstall programs a lot. The only security app, however, was an upgrade on my antivirus - ESET. It is probably just a coincidence, but I noticed that I could not open Movie Maker less than 24 hours after Windows installed 28 updates.
