Mark your calendars, Microsoft is ready to release the free Windows 8.1 upgrade on the 17th of October, 2013. The announcement was made yesterday by Microsoft's Link Removed on Link Removed. Special thanks to @nmsuk for the quick find!

With the RTM release of Windows 8.1 imminent, a new report claims that Windows 8.1 RTM build number will be 6.3.9600.16384. This news comes immediately after the leak of build 9477, which was leaked yesterday.

It looks like OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) will receive Windows 8.1 on September 1st, 2013, that is if you believe a Hungarian Windows website which posts the following:

Windows 8.1 - get on 1 September, the OEMs?
A leaked e-mail to Microsoft's OEM partners and system builders sent out yet as of yesterday evening, which will let them know that the OEM system pricing is from 1 September take place, so now it was sure to be a partner with the Windows 8.1 - 's.

RTM is forecast for this month - don't know if it will be released to msdn subscribers at the same time though.

The latest sources seem to indicate that RTM has been sent out, but will not be the same as the final bits. This would make downloading the RTM a bit pointless, if true. The word is also that RTM will not be available to Technet or MSDN subscribers.

How would the upgrade affect our current setup in terms of customization and installed programs? Will the update erase/delete/reconfigure anything on our setup? If that is the case, no thank you.
