I have an odd networking situation. our cable is indefinately out and we dont want to get a landline just for dsl. so we bought a router for our neighbor with cable internet and pay to use her network. but i cannot get enough of a signal on my powerbook to connect very well (probably because its metal)

but can i create an ad-hoc network to share the connection to the internet through the vista pc? i have a d-link wireless n router and also a linksys wireless g card on the pc, and wireless g on the laptop.

i know this is not the typical ad hoc setup since the way internet comes into our house is wireless. it is very hard googling this sort of thing but im still searching. any help would be greatly appreciated.

-thanks

To address the networking situation you described, where you aim to share the internet connection from your neighbor's cable internet via a Vista PC to your PowerBook, creating an ad-hoc network can be a possible solution. Here's a step-by-step guide on how you can set this up:

Setting Up an Ad-Hoc Network to Share Internet Connection:

  1. Connect the Vista PC to the Neighbor's Network:
    • Ensure that the Vista PC is properly connected to your neighbor's wireless network using the D-Link Wireless N Router or the Linksys Wireless G Card.
[]Create an Ad-Hoc Network on the Vista PC:
    • Follow these steps to create an ad-hoc network on the Vista PC:
      • Go to "Control Panel" > "Network and Sharing...

      • Go to "Control Panel" > "Network and Sharing Center."
      • Click on "Set up a connection or network."
      • Choose "Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network."
      • Follow the on-screen instructions to create the ad-hoc network.

]Share the Internet Connection on the Vista PC:
    • Once the ad-hoc network is set up, you can proceed to share the neighbor's internet connection:
      • Go to "Control Panel" > "Network and Sharing Center."
      • Click on "Manage network connections."
      • Right-click on the neighbor's internet connection and select "Properties."
      • Go to the "Sharing" tab and check the box that allows the connection to be shared.
  2. Connect the PowerBook to the Ad-Hoc Network:
    • On your PowerBook, search for available wireless networks.
    • Locate and connect to the ad-hoc network you created on the Vista PC.

      Additional Considerations:

      • Security: Ensure that you secure your ad-hoc network with a strong password to prevent unauthorized access.
      • Signal Strength: To improve signal strength, consider optimizing the positioning of the Vista PC and PowerBook and minimizing obstructions between them.

      Notes:

      • While setting up the ad-hoc network, make sure to use compatible wireless standards between devices (Wireless G and N).
      • Ad-hoc networks are mostly suitable for temporary connections, so consider alternative long-term solutions if needed.
By following these steps, you should be able to share your neighbor's internet connection through the Vista PC to your PowerBook successfully. If you encounter any issues during the setup, feel free to ask for further assistance.
