Windows 7 Aspect ratio after windows 7

Okay so after I installed windows 7 on my wide screen laptop, I tried to play one of my games, but the aspect ratio was wrong. There are black bars on the left and right of the screen. I tried some other games and the same problem was there. I've asked around for help and people suggested updating the drivers but they should be all updated already. Then other people told me to right click on the desktop and click the catalyst control center and change the settings there but I really have no idea how to do it. Could someone give me a little guidance please? Thanks.

Do the games not have resolution settings? Are you playing in a window or full screen?

No the game doesn't have aspect ratio settings. I'm playing starcraft which is an old game and doesnt have this option. And I'm playing in full screen.
