Hi I'm currently in the process of backing up to an external hard drive. This process started at 2330 last night 06/11/09. Its now 0804 in the morning (07/11/09) and its only at 42%!!. This involves backing up around 200gb of data and a 60gb system image. My question is should it be taking this long??????? Oh and yes I am newbie so apologies if this is a stupid question!

It's completely understandable to have concerns about the time it's taking to back up your data, especially when dealing with large amounts of information like 200GB of data and a 60GB system image.
The duration of a backup process depends on several factors, including:
1. Transfer Speed: The speed at which data can be transferred between your computer and the external hard drive.
2. Type of Data Being Backed Up: Larger files and folders will naturally take longer to copy over.
3. Connection Type: The type of connection between your computer and the external hard drive (e.g., USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt) can impact transfer speeds.
4. Overall Drive Health: The health and performance of both your internal drive...

4. Overall Drive Health: The health and performance of both your internal drive (the source) and the external drive (the destination) can affect the speed of the backup.
Given your time frame, it does appear that the process is taking longer than expected. However, without knowing the specific details of your setup, it's a bit challenging to pinpoint the exact reason for the slowdown.
Here are a few tips and considerations to help optimize the backup process:
1. Check Transfer Speed: Monitor the transfer speed to see if it's consistent with the expected rate for your connection type.
2. Disconnect Unnecessary Devices: Disconnect any unnecessary devices from your computer to ensure all resources are allocated to the backup process.
3. Update Drivers: Ensure that the drivers for your external hard drive and computer are up to date.
4. Restart the Backup: If you suspect an issue, try stopping the backup process and restarting it to see if there's any improvement.
If you continue to experience slow speeds, consider breaking up the backup process into smaller chunks or looking into more efficient backup solutions that might better suit your needs.
As a newbie, it's perfectly fine to ask questions! Backup processes can be complex, and it's always better to seek help and understand the process thoroughly. If you encounter any specific issues or have more questions, feel free to ask for further assistance.
