Windows 7 Blue screen when I try to shut down

I own an older Hp G50 laptop that came with vista but i put win7 32 bit on it. I installed all of the usual stuff that I would put on including steam, office and Photoshop. For a long time now, I have been having seemingly random blue screens only when I tried to shut down the computer. I tried for a long time to solve it myself by trial and error and believe I have isolated the problem. Whenever I have an extra process open (such as steam) that runs in the background, I have the shutdown issue. I recently removed steam and noticed the problem go away, only to reappear when I installed an application called fences for desktop management. I'm pretty sure this is the cause, but I don't have any idea of how to find a fix for it. The extra step of opening task manager and closing the process is starting to get old. Does anyone have a possible solution?

Just so we are clear, you are saying you have one program, "Fences" that if you shut down prior to shutting down your computer, things work normally?

I am not a programmer, but I believe programs have to be written so as to allow specific procedures to work. Maybe an update to your program would help, or maybe it will just not work in Win 7.

Did you install Win 7 over Vista or do a clean install?

Have you checked the event viewer to see if any error or warning messages are showing up around the time you have problems.

If you have an actual BSOD, you might post the mini dump file if you have your system set up to produce one.

no, its not just fences. like I said in my original post, it seems to be any background applications including steam. I have also had issues when windows live applications have been active. I leave mesh open most of the time to keep my laptop in sync with my desktop when im at home. Fences is a program that doesn't have an active window, it runs in the background. see Stardock.com - Your Edge In Software

I did a clean install of win7 because It had crapware loaded on when I bought it and I wanted to be certain it was gone.

No error messages occur and it shuts down normally until a certain point. after it says its done logging out, it has a second where it says windows is shutting down then has blue screen. I will try to get the mini dump file and post it soon.

I don't have the software to open the file, but this is the info that windows gave me on startup

I do not read dump files, but someone will probably come along soon that does.

Until then, all I might suggest is that you use Task Manager to shut down some applications before you shut down your system to see if you can isolate the problematic utility.

Hi Sven6847 and Welcome.

STOP 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Usual causes:
Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner, Backup tool, compatibility

Your dump file lists NIPALK.sys Mon May 12 22:21:05 2003 as the probable cause. This National Instruments Corporation driver (along with several others) pre-dates Windows 7 by a full four years and there is very little chance they will be compatible. If you cannot update to something post June 2009 then Uninstall.
Old and incompatible drivers will cause issues with Windows 7.

Let us know how it goes. If you get further problems with blue screens, attach your new dump files with details to a new post.

It Works! Thanks for the help. I followed what you said, but it didn't work immediately. While in device manager, I found that my cd drives drivers were having an error (code 39 or something like that) and after finding another thread addressing that problem, my laptop works great again. Thanks again for the help. :peace:
