Windows 7 BSOD from watching videos and browsing.

Hello,

I started getting BSOD a couple months ago. It occurred as I was watching a youtube video. It only happened once during the month so I thought it wouldn't be a big deal. And then throughout the past month I started getting it once a week and then every other day. Now I don't even get BSOD anymore. When I'm just browsing around my screen just freezes for a few seconds then becomes filled with coloured pixels covering my screen and then my screen just turns off but my laptop is still on. I'm not a tech savy person so I don't know what to do. I also have been running CCleaner so I realized it has deleted past dmp files so I hope these current ones will help.

Yeah there is something really wrong. My screen freezes, colours flash all over my screen and then screen turns off and I have to force restart. This happened 3 times today. 1 from watching a video, another from watching someone streaming, and another from play a game.

More dmp files were created.

atikmpag.sys is AMD's video driver for their graphics cards. (Yeah, that's right, AMD's drivers FAILED - ONE MORE WIN FOR nVidia)

I'm not entirely sure how to install/uninstall AMD drivers, but there should be instructions here: http://windows7forums.com/windows-7...ation-instructions-microsoft-windows-7-a.html

There are 4 drivers you should uninstall - they have been known to cause BSODs, and they're outdated.

i) USB 3.0 Controller Drivers

the USB 3.0 drivers have been known to cause BSODs in the past, so uninstall them or update them to the latest version.

ii) Unkown Driver - probably your CD Driver

This has been known to cause BSODs as well, so uninstall it.

iii) Hotspot Shield Driver

Hotspot Shield Drivers - also known BSOD causers. I don't know why you have this either, a decent Antivirus software could protect your system well enough - more on AV software later.

iv) Anchorfree Driver (related to the Hotspot Shield Driver)

Uninstall your Hotspot Shield Driver, device, whatever is related to it. I'll give you a link to a free antivirus software that's reliable.

Antivirus software: Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Security Essentials is a trusted Antivirus program, so no worries on that.

Instructions for installing ATI drivers: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure

Un-install HotSpotShield - it is known to cause BSOD's on Win7 systems.

USB 3.0 drivers date from 2010 - this version is known to cause BSOD's also. Please update to 2011/2012 version

Adobe file system driver dates from 2008 - un-install Adobe products (install updated versions if you want to continue using them).

Hello, I've reinstalled my amd driver, uninstalled HotSpot Shield, and PCTools.

I'm slowly making my way through the list of updates; its just taking me a while because I don't have a lot time to spare. So far I haven't been getting BSOD or coloured pixel crashes but that's mainly because I haven't tried watching any videos

I've updated these drivers:
Driver Reference Table - SFEP.sys
Link Removed - Invalid URL
Driver Reference Table - adfs.SYS

A couple drivers I'm having trouble updating is the Driver Reference Table - ArcSoftKsUFilter.sys because it's telling me to buy the product and updating http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=nusb3hub.sys

I'm having trouble navigating the website finding which one to download.

If it tells you to buy the product, then uninstall it first and see if that works (I'd rather have no video editing software but a working computer, instead of the other way around).

As for the USB 3.0 issues, I'm not sure which product/device you're using, so perhaps try updating your motherboard and chipset drivers? (ie: if you have an ASUS motherboard, go to ASUS's driver page and download the correct drivers for your motherboard and chipset) (if you have a computer from HP/Dell/Acer etc., go to their site and download the correct drivers)

IF you're not sure what products you're using:
Start > QuickSearch “DeviceManager”
or
Start > Control Panel >View by: Large Icons > Device Manager.
On Device Manager, expand the tab labelled "Universal Serial Bus controllers". To update the drivers for these devices:

Option A.
1. Double-click the device/s for the USB Controllers (on Device Manager).
2. Open the Tab labelled "Driver".
3. Click "Update Driver".
4. Let Windows automatically search for and driver updates.
Notes: Normally Windows won't detect the latest drivers for the device, but it's worth a shot.

Option B.
1. Record the names of the devices.
2. Google the device name.
3. Try find an update.
Notes: Get updates from the actual manufacturer site, 3rd Party Site Drivers can contain viruses.

Option C.
1. Record the names of the devices.
2. Post back to this thread with the list.
3. Ask NICELY for us to find driver updates for you.
4. Wait patiently for an answer.
Notes: Our driver search can be slow, and may not always be accurate, but it saves you time and effort.

Try updating the USB 3.0 device with this driver: Sony eSupport - VPCCB15FD - Drivers & Software
I'll "fix" the entries in the DRT regarding this - the only way to get drivers from them (that I've found) is to register. And that's not how the Driver Reference Table is designed (it's supposed to be relatively easy). In short it'll now suggest that you get the drivers from the OEM (Sony).

ArcSoft stuff likely came pre-installed on your Sony. Un-install it as the General suggests. If you need the software back, contact Sony about how to get a copy (it's likely somewhere in the downloads pages for your model).
