BSOD - IDSvia64.sys - Help Please

Hello All,

I have a

ASUS P8Z86-V PRO/GEN3 Motherboard
ASUS GTX 580 ENGTX580 DCII/2DIS/1536MD5
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz
16 GB RAM
OCZ Agility3, bios 2.15 (Updated) SSD Boot
Western Digital WD2002FAEX 2TB Drive
Western Digital WD30EZRX 3 TB Drive
3 Raided Western Digital 2TB = 5.5 TB Raid Drive

Built the machine to run as a media server and for Battlefield 3

About two months ago I started to get plagued with BSOD :(

I attached my dmp files.

It seems it has something to do with the anti-virus, but I removed Norton 360 ver 4 and replaced it with Norton Security 2012 hoping this would resolve it.

If I restore my machine back to Jan 3 2012, the problem seem to go away, but then after I do my updates, it comes back.

It almost seems that when I am running Uttorent and IE8 is when I notice it most, but I am unsure.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Douglas

Hi RockStar1965 and Welcome to The Forum.

STOP 0x00000019: BAD_POOL_HEADER
Usual causes:
Device driver

Your latest dump file lists IDSvia64.sys as the probable cause.
This is a Norton Internet Security file.
Old and incompatible drivers can and do cause issues with Windows 7, often giving false error codes.
Random stop codes can often indicate hardware issues.

As a Priority:

Norton is known to be a cause of BSOD's on many Windows 7 systems. I suggest that you uninstall Norton using the Link Removed in Safe Mode. Download Blue Screen friendly Link Removed due to 404 Error as its replacement. Make sure Windows firewall is enabled!

sptd.sys Sun Oct 11 21:55:14...
Hello again,

Here is a complete report zipped.

Please any help,

I have replaced the SSD, no change, switched to HDD, no change.

Upgraded Norton, no change.

Tried the last seven Nivida drivers, no change.

All I know is two months age this system ran for almost nine months without a failure type reboot.

Gaming system $10 anyone lol...

sptd.sys Sun Oct 11 21:55:14 2009 The sptd.sys driver is notorious for causing BSOD's with Windows 7. It's a driver used and installed along with Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120 which you'll also have to uninstall.
Then use the correct (32bit or 64bit) download from Link Removed to uninstall the SPTD.SYS driver.
Make sure to select the uninstall button! DO NOT SELECT INSTALL!!

Let us know how it goes. If you get further problems with blue screens, attach your new dump files and details and we'll move on from there.

HTH.

Solution
Thank you so much for your time.

Interesting though that I haven't had a BSOD for the last 24 hours,

I am going run all those debug stuff and do a file compare to see if something updated in the last 48 hours.

I will try those steps and will respond with any findings.

Again Thank you!

Hello

I got another BSOD today, so to limit changes I have uninstalled DAEMON and removed the sptd.sys driver using the link that you supplied.

I noticed in the one of the diagnostic dumps it said something about errors on Drive 1, which is a 3 x 2TB WD Green drive in raid mode.

I ran a chkdsk on it and got some errors, but it didn't show me what exactly.

Anyways, I logged everything and I am keeping a daily copy of your diagnostic data and saving in a time stamped folder, doing file compares to see if I spot anything, so far, nothing jumps out.

My next step will be to remove norton after the next BSOD, just want to do one thing at a time so when we hit the source it will put some certainty to it.

Thank you again

Hello, another BSOD

I have now uninstalled Norton and installing the Microsoft Security Essentials

Can you upload your latest dump files? It will (a) help to point the finger. (b) give me a laugh! :p.

Joking with (b) by the way!!

Hello Elmer

I have attached the latest debug file.

I have not had a BSOD with Norton removed yet.

Still, have a gut feeling that Norton isn't the true colpret, but the victom of something else crashing it.

I am really hoping I will get a crash soon, so I could see something else.

One other thing I noticed, I have some Logitech game controller F710, that I configured as the Microsoft game controller so that they would map into a game that we play, Battlefield 3, which is constantly being updated. Anyways sometime the game controllers response drop, and maybe even malfunctions.

Could a USB driver be playing havoc?

Thank you again in advance.

Hi Doug,

I wish I could have your faith in Norton. Sadly, these days, with 7 can be a bit mis-directed. They need to pull their socks up.

Code:

*                                                                             *

Use !analyze -v to get detailed debugging information.

IDSvia64.sys belongs to? You've guessed it, Link Removed. This is from the dump dated Fri Apr 6 00:14:30.743 2012 Was Norton removed then? Did you run the clean up tool? Link Removed Make sure to run it in Safe Mode to remove all the crap it deliberately leaves behind to interfere with your replacement AV, hence making you think "this new AV is crap", it's the old Norton AV crap really. They're after your pennies. Your system, if Norton is removed, is still full of Norton drivers. What are you going to replace it with?

Hello Elmer,

I have done a safe removal now,

Attached is the latest dumps, what file are you looking at to see the drivers?

So far I have not seen a reboot since Norton has be removed.

Any chance there was a config prob and if I reloaded Norton everything would be OK?

I know you're not big on Norton, but I have 6 other machines that are OK...

It seems that you have a good confidence level in Microsoft Security Ensensial, It should be as good if not better

Hello Elmer,

Here is a dump from March 30 2012, when I started to get a bunch of BSOD, in these dumps, you can see that there were other issues.

Unfortunately I don't have the diagnostic files that your site uses, mind you I could always do a system restore and produce them, but

tcpip.sys
USBPORT.SYS
usbhub.sys
Wdf01000.sys

Anyways if there is a system for checking these, not sure how to do it,

Douglas

I know where you are coming from Doug, Personally I use ESET, but MSE has a proven history of being blue screen friendly, hence the recommendation when you have blue screen issues.

I'm pretty sure even if you were not having blue screen issues, MSE would perform more than an adequate job. Norton (and AVG) are the two big No Noes with Windows 7, they cause more problems than they cure. I wouldn't let either close to a pc I own, and I'm not alone. TBH, if anyone dealing with BSOD's sees Norton or AVG, you're told to get rid fast.

You say Norton works fine on six other machines. Are they identical? 32 or 64bit? Same Make/Model? Same hardware? Same updates? Same programs? My guess is not.

In all honesty, I seriously suggest you look for replacement AV software for the other machines. Otherwise it's a time bomb waiting to kick in.

Mini rant done!! :p

Now, onwards to your Minidump!!

Ok, at the moment I'm still seeing Norton files everywhere, as well as being blamed for your crash. Can you go to your minidump folder and delete all the dmp files in there. Then wait for a fresh crash. Then run the SF tool again, Meanwhile I'll also bin your older files

Sorry it seems to be taking a while, but BSOD's are about eliminating the obvious/possibles. The drivers are the cheap (free) option, so best to sort them first. I'm gonna be about pretty regular the next few days, so if I can't help you, I'll find someone who can.

Hello Elmer,

I think I was able to verify that Norton was the problem, didn't get a crash for a couple of days,

I complaint to Norton and they said they had a fix, They sent me a file, Did a fresh install of Windows and Norton,

Now I got a new BSOD, can you verify that this is new, or just Norton hiding? lol

Can you tell me if this is the Norton Issue or is it a Device Driver, if so which one, I think there are like a thousands.
Thank you in advance
