I have a Canon i960 printer on a network hosted on a Win XP ver PC. From a Vista 32 bit laptop all works well and we can see the qty of ink left via the status monitor.

On the Win 7-64 bit machine, I can print ok but the status monitor opens and reports the printer is not available (or not responding).

Any ideas? I have latest driver enhancements installed from Canon on all three PCs. Does the Win 7 block certain network functions that are allowed in Vista?

Solution
When dealing with networked printers and different versions of Windows operating systems, compatibility issues can sometimes arise. Here are a few suggestions to troubleshoot the issue with the Canon i960 printer on the Win 7-64 bit machine:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Network Connectivity:
    • Ensure that the Win 7-64 bit machine is properly connected to the network where the printer is hosted. Verify network settings and connectivity.
    []Firewall and Antivirus Software:
    • Check if any firewall or antivirus software on the Win 7-64 bit machine is blocking the communication with the printer. You might need to configure firewall settings to allow printer communication.

    ]Printer Sharing Settings:
    • Verify the printer sharing settings on the Win XP PC hosting the networked printer. Ensure that printer sharing is properly configured and accessible by the Win 7-64 bit machine.
    []Driver Compatibility:
    • Although you mentioned having the latest driver enhancements from Canon installed, confirm that the driver versions are fully compatible with Windows 7 64-bit. Sometimes, older drivers may not work correctly on newer operating systems.
    [
    ]Compatibility Mode:
    • Try running the status monitor software in compatibility mode. Right-click on the status monitor executable, go to Properties, then the Compatibility tab, and select an older version of Windows like Windows Vista. Apply the changes and try running the status monitor again.
    []Network Discovery:
    • Make sure that network discovery and file sharing are enabled on the Win 7-64 bit machine. This can sometimes affect the communication with networked devices like printers.
    [
    ]Network Permissions:
    • Check the network permissions on the Win XP PC to ensure that the Win 7-64 bit machine has the necessary permissions to access the printer and its status monitor.

      Windows 7 Network Considerations:

While Windows 7 does not inherently block network functions compared to Windows Vista, there may be security settings or network configuration differences that could lead to issues with printer communication. Ensuring proper network sharing settings and permissions should help resolve connectivity problems. If after trying these steps the issue persists, you may also consider contacting Canon support for further assistance or checking the Windows event logs on the Win 7-64 bit machine for any relevant error messages related to the printer status monitor.
