I recently bought a Toshiba Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a HP Photosmart 3100 connected via USB to my iMac which is running Snow Leopard.
I've installed the printer in Windows with no problems. Certain applications, like Firefox and Windows Live Mail, can print with no problems. Other applications, like Quickbooks Easystart 2010 and Adobe Reader, can't print at all. I try to print a PDF in Adobe Reader, and it sends it to the printer like everything is fine, but the printer just sits idle as if nothing has been sent. No error messages, it just doesn't print. I've tried reinstalling the printer in Windows, but obviously it didn't help.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

This issue might be related to compatibility or configuration settings. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this problem:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Update Printer Drivers:
    • Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed for your HP Photosmart 3100 on your Windows 7 laptop. Sometimes outdated drivers can cause printing issues.
    []Printer Spooler Service:
    • Restart the Print Spooler service on your Windows 7 laptop. This service manages all print jobs and can sometimes get stuck, preventing printing.
      • Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
      • Locate the "Print Spooler" service, right-click on it, and select "Restart."
    [
    ]Check Printer Settings:
    • Verify that the HP Photosmart 3100 is set as the default printer in Windows.
      • Go to "Devices and Printers" from the Control Panel, right-click on the HP printer, and select "Set as default printer."
    []Application-Specific Issues:
    • For programs like Quickbooks Easystart 2010 and Adobe Reader, check their printer settings and ensure they are configured to use the correct printer.
    [
    ]Print Test Page:
    • Print a test page from the HP printer settings on your Windows 7 laptop to check if the printer is functioning correctly with Windows.
    []PDF Printing Issues:
    • If Adobe Reader is specifically causing problems, try printing to a different printer or print a different PDF file to see if the issue is related to a specific document.
    [
    ]Network Configuration:
    • Ensure proper network connectivity between your Windows 7 laptop and the iMac sharing the printer. If there are any network issues, it could impact printing.
  2. Alternative Printing Methods:
    • If the direct USB connection to the iMac is causing issues, you might consider setting up the HP printer as a network printer on your Windows 7 laptop.

      Additional Information:

      • Sharing a printer between different operating systems can sometimes lead to compatibility issues. Ensuring that both devices have compatible drivers and configurations is crucial for successful printing.
      • If the issue persists after trying these steps, you may also consider reaching out to HP support for specific printer troubleshooting assistance.
Try these steps and see if they help resolve the printing issues you are experiencing with Quickbooks Easystart 2010 and Adobe Reader. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you have any other questions!
