Okay, I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from XP, (Completely wiped and reinstalled)
I'm having a problem connecting two PCs with a crossover cable. They're in the same domain, and they're in the same homegroup. My setup is like this:

My more powerful system is connected via straighthrough cable to the router, and the secondary system is connected via wireless card. I need the wireless card before Christmas, because I'm going to be using it in another computer for my brother's room. I have two network interface cards in the main system, and one physical in the secondary. I've attached them via crossover, and all I'm getting is a response of that basic network as a public and unidentified network. I've tried searching for resolutions, and I need to say this:

The networks names and interfaces are not clickable. Where it says "Public network" is just text, I can't click it to change it to a home network. Anyone who can help, PLEASE do.

I'm thinking of calling Microsoft soon if I have to.

It seems like you're facing some difficulties in setting up a direct connection between two PCs using a crossover cable after upgrading to Windows 7. I can help you troubleshoot this issue before you reach out to Microsoft support. Here are some steps you can take to try to resolve the problem:

Setting up a Direct Connection with a Crossover Cable:

  1. Check Network Adapter Properties:
    • Right-click on the network icon in the system tray and select "Open Network and Sharing Center."
    • Click on the "Change adapter settings" option.
    • Right-click on the network adapters in use and choose "Properties."
    • Make sure the file and printer sharing is enabled in the properties.

    []Assign Static IP Addresses:
    • Assign static IP addresses to both PCs on the same subnet. For example, PC1 could have an IP address of 192.168.1.1 and PC2 could have 192.168.1.2.
    • Set the subnet mask to be the same on both PCs (usually 255.255.255.0).
    [
    ]Ensure File Sharing is Enabled:
    • Go to the Network and Sharing Center.
    • Ensure that network discovery and file sharing are turned on.
    []Adjust Network Profile:
    • If the network is detected as a public network, try changing it to a private network.
    • You can do this by going to the Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Click on the network category, and you should see options to change it to a private/homelike network.
    [
    ]Check Firewall and Antivirus Settings:
    • Temporarily disable any third-party firewall or antivirus software to see if they are blocking the connection.
    []Run Network Troubleshooter:
    • Windows has built-in network troubleshooters that can help identify and fix common networking issues. You can access it by right-clicking on the network icon in the system tray and selecting "Troubleshoot problems."
    [
    ]Reset Network Components:
    • You can try resetting the network components by running the following commands in an elevated Command Prompt:
      Code:
netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset ipconfig /flushdns
Try these steps and see if they help in resolving the issue. If the problem persists, please don't hesitate to reach out to Microsoft for further assistance. Let me know if you need any more help with this!
