I have two computers, one is running Windows 7 RC1, and the other is running Linux Mint. I have been attempting to connect the two computers with a crossover cable and then share files through it. The two computers detect each other on the network, but my Windows 7 computer doesn't have the Linux Mint computer under the "sharing" drop menu. The connection is working, because the Linux Mint computer is connected to the internet through the Windows 7 computer. Any help on getting this to work would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
It seems like you are experiencing some difficulties with sharing files between your Windows 7 RC1 computer and your Linux Mint computer over a direct network connection using a crossover cable. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Verify Network Settings:

  1. Check Network Discovery: On your Windows 7 computer, make sure that network discovery is turned on. This setting allows your computer to see other devices on the network.
  2. Workgroup Settings: Ensure that both computers are in the same workgroup. You can check this by right-clicking on "Computer" -> "Properties" -> "Advanced system settings" -> "Computer Name" tab.

    Windows 7 Configuration:

  3. Shared Folders: Create a shared folder on your Windows 7 computer that you want to access from Linux Mint. Right-click the folder, select "Properties," go to the "Sharing" tab, and enable sharing.
  4. Set Permissions: Make sure the shared folder has the correct permissions set for access by other devices on the network.

    Linux Mint Configuration:

  5. Network Configuration: Check the network settings on your Linux Mint computer. Ensure that the connection is established correctly and that both computers are on the same subnet.

    Accessing the Shared Folder:

  6. Access the Windows Share: On Linux Mint, you can use tools like smbclient or smb:// in the file manager address bar to access the shared folder on Windows 7.

    Firewall and Antivirus:

  7. Firewall Settings: Check the firewall settings on both Windows 7 and Linux Mint to ensure that file sharing ports are not blocked.

    Additional Tips:

    • Ensure that both computers have unique IP addresses within the same subnet.
    • Restart both computers after making any changes to network settings.
    • Test the connection and file sharing after implementing the above steps.
By following these steps, you should be able to establish a successful file-sharing connection between your Windows 7 computer and Linux Mint computer over the direct network connection using a crossover cable. If you encounter any specific issues during these steps, feel free to provide more details for further assistance.
