My AppData folder is about 1.7 Gb and has the usual three subfolders (Local, LocalLow and Roaming). I sometimes copy the whole or part of it for backup reasons. However, I cannot do so now because when I try to take a copy, it says the move will be only 345MB, and that is what it copies, stopping well short. I have investigated permissions etc and found nothing amiss. The problem is in the Local folder, although I can copy all its sub-files separately.

What is really extraordinary is that if I access the AppData folder from another PC across my home network, I can copy the full 1.7Gb!

Any ideas?

Solution
It seems like you are facing a specific issue with copying your AppData folder locally on your computer, where it only allows you to copy a smaller portion of the folder size compared to when you access it over your home network from another PC. This discrepancy in behavior can be caused by various factors. Here are some potential reasons for this issue and possible solutions:

Possible Causes and Solutions:

  1. File System Errors:
    • Cause: The file system on your local drive might be experiencing errors or inconsistencies.
    • Solution: You can try running a disk check to fix any potential issues with the file system.

Possible Causes and Solutions:

  1. File System Errors:
    • Cause: The file system on your local drive might be experiencing errors or inconsistencies.
    • Solution: You can try running a disk check to fix any potential issues with the file system.
    []File/Folder Attribute Restrictions:
    • Cause: There could be specific file or folder attributes set on the Local folder that prevent the whole folder from being copied.
    • Solution: Check the attributes on the Local folder and its contents to ensure there are no restrictions preventing a full copy.
    [
    ]File/Folder Compression:
    • Cause: The Local folder might be compressed, leading to discrepancies in reported file sizes during copy operations.
    • Solution: Check if the Local folder is compressed and decompress it if necessary before copying.
    []Network Share Permissions:
    • Cause: The permissions set on the network share might allow full access while local permissions restrict copying.
    • Solution: Verify the permissions on the folders and make sure they allow copying locally.
    [
    ]Temporary Files or Hidden Files:
    • Cause: Hidden or temporary files within the Local folder may be causing issues during the copy process.
    • Solution: Enable the visibility of hidden files and check for any temporary files that could be affecting the copy operation.
    []Third-party Software Interference:
    • Cause: Some third-party software or antivirus programs might be interfering with the copy operation locally.
    • Solution: Temporarily disable any third-party software that might be affecting the copying process and try again.

      Next Steps:

    [
]Check and Repair Your File System:
    • Run a disk check to identify and fix any file system errors.
    []Verify File and Folder Attributes:
    • Check the attributes of the Local folder and ensure there are no restrictions preventing copying.
    [
    ]Decompress the Local Folder:
    • Decompress the Local folder if it is compressed.
    []Review Network Share Permissions:
    • Compare the permissions on your local machine with those on the network share.
    [
    ]Inspect Hidden and Temporary Files:
    • Make hidden and temporary files visible and remove any that might hinder the copy process. By addressing these potential issues, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the discrepancy in copying the AppData folder on your local machine.
