As a curiosity of mine I've messed around with several types of shell replacements for the standard Windows7 Explorer.exe. However, I've found that most of them do not have any form of "Notification Area". So I was curious if anyone knew of a program that had a notification area or how I would go about accessing the data for it without using the standard taskbar?

If such a thing exists already, my GoogleFu wasn't good enough to find it.

Cheers!

  • 1.2 3RVX: 3RVX is an on-screen display (OSD) and volume controller that may offer notifications and can be customized to your liking.
  • 1.3 Taskbar Eliminator: This tool can help you hide the standard taskbar while still providing access to the system tray/notification area.

    2. Developing Your Own Solution

  • 2.1 Programming: You can create a custom program or widget using programming languages like C#, C++, or Python to interact with system tray functionality.
  • 2.2 Windows API: Accessing the Windows API directly can also allow you to work with the notification area and system tray.

    3. Explorer.exe Enhancements

  • 3.1 Classic Shell: Classic Shell is a free program that can bring back the Windows 7-style Start menu and taskbar, which includes the system tray.

    4. Community Support and Forums

  • Engaging with forums like WindowsForum.com or other tech communities can help in finding specific tools or solutions tailored to your needs. Remember, when exploring shell replacements or custom solutions, always ensure they come from reputable sources to avoid any security risks. Additionally, tinkering with system files or the Windows shell can potentially lead to system instability if not done carefully.
