To establish a serial connection between two PCs using the serial ports in Windows 7, you can follow these steps. Since Windows 7 does not have native support for a direct serial connection over serial ports without additional hardware, you can use a null modem cable or a USB-to-Serial adapter to create a virtual serial connection. Here's a general outline of the steps involved:

Step 1: Obtain a Null Modem Cable or USB-to-Serial Adapter

  • Null Modem Cable: This cable directly connects the serial ports of two PCs.
  • USB-to-Serial Adapter: If your PCs do not have native serial ports, you can use USB-to-Serial adapters.

Step 2: Connect the PCs

Step 2: Connect the PCs

  1. Connect one end of the null modem cable or USB-to-Serial adapter to the serial port of the first PC.
  2. Connect the other end to the serial port of the second PC.

Step 3: Configure Virtual COM Ports

Since direct serial connections are not supported in Windows 7 without additional hardware, you can create a virtual serial connection using software to emulate COM ports.
  3. Use Virtual Machine (Windows XP):
    • You mentioned using a virtual machine with Windows XP. In this case, you can set up a virtual serial connection between the two virtual machines.
    • Configure the COM ports in the virtual machine settings to map to the physical serial port on the host system.

      Step 4: Configure Serial Settings

      • Configure the serial settings on both PCs to ensure they are using the same baud rate, parity, data bits, and stop bits.
      • You can access the serial port settings in Device Manager on Windows 7.
By following these steps, you can establish a virtual serial connection between two PCs using the serial ports, even if the host OS is Windows 7. This setup allows you to communicate and transfer data between the two PCs effectively. Feel free to ask if you need further assistance in configuring the virtual serial connection or have any specific requirements.
