Windows Vista disk checking for error utility won't run at all

i can not get the disk check utility to run or schedule a scan for error at all. the UAC won't even ask for permission to do so it just disappears when I try to schedule a DSKCHK for errors,Any help would really help me I'm a novice at this!! Is there some setting thats stopping this utility from running?? I have a Dell Inspiron 531 with Vista Home Basic and 4GB of memory(the only "Upgrade" is the installation of the extra memory.
