Epson WF 2760, answering machine, Comcast Gateway

I think my setup does not need all the wires I used although it works.

I ran the wall line to the Comcast gateway which has a splitter plugged in to it. From the gateway splitter I ran a line to a splitter. That splitter ran one line to the Epson All in One and the other line from the splitter to the answering machine.

Instead of all that could I have, run the wall line to the Comcast gateway splitter. Then run a line from that splitter to the Epson line in and from the Epson ext to the answering machine.
The fax is on 6 rings and the answering machine on 4.

I know it sounds like a lot of work but I am handicapped and it is hard for me to actually test this out.

In other words, did I run an extra line which has the splitter in my current set up?

If I understand you correctly. Yes. You could have run a single line from Comcast's junction box to your [and that "junction box" is your Arris Telephony Modem that provides you with phone, internet, and cable?] Epson all-in-one and then used (if this model offers it) the RJ-11 extention (4-conductor) on the printer to run your answering machine / phone device.

I use MagicJack now and I back fed the magic jack phone line through my home's existing phone extension system and it works wonderfully. I have two printers that are fax capable and I use an RJ-11 A/B Switch to switch between the two because one scanner all-in-one can scan 11x14 and the other is just a letter scanner.

Cheers!

I am not too techy with wiring and do remember the Comcast man mentioning back feed.
The only hand held device I have is a tan odd looking splitter which is in the #1 port of the gateway telephony. I do not know what an RJ 11 is - perhaps it is the device that plugs into the gateway I just mentioned as a tan unit?
When I get a nimble body here I will try to eliminate that cable.

I will Google magic Jack.

There are TWO style plugs that look the same and provide similar features. RJ-11 is a 4-conductor jack mainly for residential use. The other is an RJ-45 jack this is more common today because it connects an ethernet cable between a computer and its modem or TV, for example.

The RJ-45 is an 8-conductor plug that is crimped onto an 8-conductor shielded twisted pair cable that can be used for phone as well as internet purposes.

However, the RJ-11is a 4-conductor plug crimped onto a 4-conductor [flat] wire (for telephone purposes mainly and is an almost obsolete frome a business point of view because it can only handle two phone lines/numbers at a time). This is the jack that is used in a lot of residential housing and within older homes, and has been around the longest.

Cheers!

I tried but altho the machine accepted the fax it would not print. I then connected them as described above and the fax printed out.

Cool.

However when you had set th he answering machine and fax rings up; the fax ring number should always be lower in value thsn the answering machine's because if someone needs to leave you a voice message the fax is always going to answer first because the ring count is lower. By increasing the ring count of the fax to 6 and setting the answering machine to 4 you will get a proper response that you want.

Also you need to set the setting on your Epson all-in-one to tell it if you have a TAD device installed (connected to) on your Epson's phone extension that way your all-in-one will let the call go through to your home's phone system.

Cheers!
