When I attempt to check for updates, I receive the following error message:

"An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:

Code 8024402F

Windows encountered an unknown error."

When I click on "Get help with this error" a window pops up with "0 results for "WindowsUpdate_8024402F" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"."

Any ideas as to what to what the problem could be? I'm running BitDefender 2008, but even when it's disabled I still receive the error. I've also got Internet Explorer automatically detecting my LAN settings.

Thanks!

UPDATE - FIXED!

It seems as if Windows Firewall was blocking a security certificate that originated from Vista. Simply disable your Windows Firewall (and BitDefender in my case too) and it should fix the problem. Such a simply solution but I didn't think Windows Firewall would conflict with Windows Update...silly me!

It's not uncommon for security tools like firewalls to occasionally interfere with Windows Update processes, so temporarily disabling them can sometimes help to isolate and fix such issues. If you encounter any other issues or have further questions, feel free to ask!
