can anyone point me to a thread or FAQ on the easiest method of sharing my files from my evernal HD connected to win7 with my computers connected to xp.
my main pc is running win7 and has an external HD with all my documents and I want to share them with my laptop and netbook that are both running XP

BTW there is a bit of a learning curve going from xp to 7 I'm finding it hard to figure out how to adjust some settings. or rather where to go to adjust them

Solution
Sharing files between a Windows 7 machine with an external hard drive and computers running Windows XP involves setting up a network share. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to achieve this:

Sharing Files from Windows 7 to Windows XP:

  1. Verify Workgroup Settings:
    • Make sure both the Windows 7 and Windows XP machines are part of the same workgroup.
      • Right-click on "Computer" or "My Computer" on Windows 7. Select "Properties" and click on "Change settings" next to "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings".
      • Ensure the workgroup name is the same on both systems.
[]Share the External Hard Drive on Windows 7:
    • Right-click on the folder or drive you want to share (external HD)...

    ]Set Permissions:
    • Configure the permissions to allow access to users on the Windows XP machines.
    • Add the Users or everyone who needs access and set the appropriate permissions.
  2. Access Shared Files on Windows XP:
    • On the Windows XP machine, open Windows Explorer.
    • Go to "My Network Places" or "Network" and look for the shared Windows 7 computer.
    • You should see the shared folder or drive. Double-click to access it.

      Adjusting Settings in Windows 7:

For adjusting settings in Windows 7, you might be looking for the Control Panel. Here's how you can access it:
      • Click on the "Start" button.
      • Open the Control Panel. You can find it in the Start menu or by searching for "Control Panel."
      • Within the Control Panel, you can adjust various settings like network settings, user accounts, display settings, etc.
If you need more specific instructions on adjusting certain settings on Windows 7, feel free to provide details, and I can guide you further. Regarding FAQs or threads, I can search the Windows Forum for relevant information on sharing files between Windows 7 and XP systems. Shall I proceed with the search?
