Windows 7 Flash drives and External hard drives not being recognised

Hi there.

I just installed windows 7 home premium today on a new system. I am having the strangest issue that i cannot figure out and have googled to the max and have found no answer.

I have 3 front USB ports, i can put on a usb headset and it works fine, mobile phone and it works fine, but as soon as i put in a usb flash drive it wont work and is unrecognisable. The same happens when i try put in an external hard drive. On any of these three ports in the front. When i use the back ports directly into the motherboard, sometimes they work and sometimes they dont.

I have taken out the usb leads and put them back into the mobo, taken the power cable out, taken the battery out. Done nearly everything i can think of and cannot get this problem solved.

Has anyone had this issue before and is there a solution. I cant see it being the motherboard itself because if it was faulty then it wouldnt recognise anything, not just flash drives and hard drives.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, this is really frustrating.

Thanks a bunch

Have you checked Device Manager to see if any problems show up?

Have you updated your chipset drivers for the motherboard?
