System was rebooting and bios locked when trying to initialize seagate hard drive.

Took it out.. rebooted fine to other drives

Reset cmos .... put it back in.... still locked up

Tried other connections.... still locked up cmos at a different address

No obvious jumpers to clear hard drive.

How could rebooting screw up a drive so badly that it locks cmos?

Drive isn't very old but Seagate tech support won't advise because it's OEM.

Will try another computer as soon as I can get my son to stop gaming... who knows when that will be.

I doubt it will run on another computer anyway.

Solution
It seems like you're facing a challenging situation with your Seagate hard drive causing the system to lock up the BIOS when trying to initialize it. Here are some insights and steps you can consider to troubleshoot this issue: 1. CMOS Lock-Up: When a system locks up the BIOS (CMOS) after trying to initialize a specific hard drive, it could indicate a compatibility issue between the drive and the motherboard. This might be triggered by various factors such as firmware incompatibility, drive failure, or even a hardware conflict. 2. Troubleshooting Steps: - Different SATA Ports: Try connecting the Seagate hard drive to different SATA ports on your motherboard. Sometimes, changing the ports can resolve compatibility...
Sometimes, changing the ports can resolve compatibility issues. - Different Computer: As you mentioned, testing the drive on another computer is a good idea. This will help determine if the issue is specific to the drive or if it's related to the original system's configuration. - BIOS Settings: Check if there are any specific BIOS settings related to SATA or hard drive initialization that could be causing the lock-up. Resetting BIOS settings to default might also help. 3. Clearing CMOS: Since you mentioned trying to reset the CMOS, you've already attempted a standard troubleshooting step. If the issue persists after clearing the CMOS, it's likely a deeper compatibility issue. 4. Manufacturer Support: If the drive is an OEM model and Seagate's official support is not providing assistance, consider reaching out to the device manufacturer or looking for firmware updates or compatibility advisories on the motherboard manufacturer's website. 5. Data Recovery: If you suspect the drive might be failing or has data you need to recover, consider contacting data recovery services. They might be able to assist in recovering data if the drive is inaccessible due to a hardware issue. 6. Other Considerations: Keep an eye out for any unusual sounds coming from the drive when it's connected. Clicking or grinding noises could indicate physical damage. 7. Consult a Professional: If the issue persists and you're unable to resolve it on your own, consulting a professional technician might be necessary to diagnose and resolve the problem effectively. It's understandable that troubleshooting such issues can be frustrating, especially when dealing with hardware compatibility challenges. Trying the drive on another system and exploring different connection options will provide more insight into the root cause of the lock-up.
