Yesterday I installed my new Samsung HD502HJ drive. I cloned my old drive onto this one using dd on an Ubuntu Live CD. So after returning into Windows 7 RC, it starts popping up messages telling me that the drive is going to fail soon. I thought this might have been due to using dd to clone the old drive so I did a fresh install of W7.

Everything was going fine for a day until I hibernated the computer. After it came back on, the same message came back. To figure this out, I ran HD Tune. It did a full scan and came back without any errors or issues. It also says the health of the drive is ok. Plus I can't say that I've seen any files come up missing or corrupted yet. And the drive is already super silent so there's no clicking or ticking.

Do you guys think this is a real faulty drive or just a false positive of some kind? My system:

Mobo: ASRock K10N78M
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 7850BE
RAM: x2 PQI 2GB DDR2-800
DVD: Lite-On SHW-160P6S

Solution
It seems you are experiencing conflicting messages about the health of your newly installed Samsung HD502HJ drive after cloning your old drive using dd on an Ubuntu Live CD. Here are some insights into your situation: 1. Message of Drive Failure: - The messages indicating that the drive is failing could potentially be a false positive. - After running HD Tune and finding no errors or issues, along with the drive showing good health, it's possible that the drive is functioning correctly. 2. Possible Causes for the Messages: - The warnings might be triggered by specific SMART attributes or other factors that might not necessarily indicate an imminent failure. - It could be due to how the drive was cloned, leading to...
- It could be due to how the drive was cloned, leading to misinterpretation by the system. 3. Actions to Consider: - Validation: Monitor the drive's performance over time. Check for any signs of degradation, such as increasing numbers of bad sectors or unusual noises. - Backup: Ensure you have backups of important data, in case the drive does encounter issues in the future. - SMART Data: You can use tools to check the SMART data periodically to track any changes or anomalies in drive health. 4. System Configuration: - Your system specifications are helpful in understanding the environment. However, the issue seems more specific to the drive itself rather than the system configuration. In conclusion, based on the information provided, the drive appears to be functioning correctly without any visible issues. It might be a false positive warning. Monitor the drive's performance, keep backups, and periodically check the SMART data for any significant changes. If issues persist or worsen, further diagnosis or a replacement may be necessary.
