I installed Windows 7 on my PC and now my DVD-ROM drive doesnt work. It shows up in My Computer, device manager says it's working properly, everything seems normal until I put in a disk, then it locks up My Computer and it's impossible to access any files from it. Every time you try to open it, it locks up. I just used this drive to install Windows 7 and it worked fine. I have an external USB drive that works fine when I plug it in. What's the deal?

    ]Check for Windows Updates:
    • Make sure your Windows 7 installation is up to date with the latest patches and updates. Sometimes, Windows updates can fix hardware compatibility issues.
    []Check for Firmware Updates:
    • Visit the manufacturer's website for your DVD-ROM drive and check if there are any firmware updates available. Updating the firmware could potentially resolve the issue.
    [
]Test the DVD-ROM Drive with Another Disk:
    • Try using a different disk in the DVD-ROM drive to see if the issue is specific to one disk. It's possible that the disk you are trying to read is causing the problem.
    []Check for Hardware Issues:
    • There might be a hardware issue with the DVD-ROM drive itself. You can try connecting the drive to another PC to see if it functions correctly there.
    [
    ]Check for Software Conflicts:
    • Sometimes, third-party software can interfere with the functioning of optical drives. Try booting into Safe Mode and see if the issue persists.
    []Run Hardware Troubleshooter:
    • Windows has a built-in Hardware Troubleshooter that can help identify and resolve hardware-related issues. You can access it through the Control Panel.
    [
    ]Use System File Checker Tool:
    • Run the System File Checker tool to scan and repair corrupted system files that may be affecting the DVD-ROM drive's performance.
  2. Check Power and Data Cables:
    • Make sure that the power and data cables connected to the DVD-ROM drive are secure and not damaged.

      External USB Drive:

Since your external USB drive is working fine, it indicates that the issue might be specific to the internal DVD-ROM drive or its configuration after the Windows 7 installation. Try these steps and see if any of them help resolve the problem with your DVD-ROM drive. If the issue persists, further troubleshooting may be required.
