Windows 7 Help Needed: Windows 7 Not Recognizing File Types for a Beginner

I'm having some issues with windows 7 recognizing file types. I am very new to computers so if you choose to answer please keep it simple and use easy to understand verbaige please!!!!!

You might try telling us what you are trying to do so we could understand better, but until then go into the Control Panel, folder options and under the view tab, uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types.
