Windows 7 Help needed with SSD

I have an Asus X58L laptop on which I am attempting to upgrade the mechanical HD to SSD. The SSD was originally in my desktop and is still loaded with Win. 7 professional. However, I keep getting an error message 0x0 and the program refuses to run. What I would like to do is remove everything from the SSD, but of course it is advised not to reformat it. Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There's nothing wrong with formatting an SSD. Boot to your Windows install media, select the advanced option, delete the partitions and install.

Thanks for the reply, but I can't format it on the laptop, as Windows is not loading. Can I format it on my Desk top, which has a spare set of plugs for an extra drive? Edit. Sorry, I was confusing formatting with defragging. Just not sure how to go about formatting.
