Hello
This is related to wifi but not it per se. I could not find the exact prefix.
Today I arrive at a hotel with an ethernet jack.
I plan to plug the router into it then connect the router and laptop hoping to obtain a bit more security than wifi.
The "advanced sharing settings" page settings are confusing to me.
I have turned off the first three and feel 2 and 3 should be off but do not know what to do with
network discovery.
My goal is to be able to communicate with the ethernet jack in the hotel as I do with the modem at home, and, not block it.
Will I still be able to get internet if the first three are turned off? I do not know what to do with streaming either.
I do no gaming or sharing but just exchange business letters which are personal.
Could you please advise me as to items I should change. My pc skill level is not that advanced.
Thank you

      • Turn off "File and printer sharing".
      • Turn off "Public folder sharing".
      • Leave "Password protected sharing" as is.
      [
    • ]These settings help limit visibility and access to your shared files on the network.
    []Internet Access:
    • Disabling the first three options (network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing) should not affect your ability to access the internet.
    • Internet access is typically controlled by the hotel's network and does not rely on these sharing settings.
    [
    ]Streaming and Other Options:
    • Since you primarily use the connection for business purposes and not for gaming or extensive file sharing, you can leave the streaming and other options as default or turn them off as well.

      Additional Recommendations:

      • Network Discovery: Turn this off to prevent the visibility of your shared files and resources on the network.
      • File and Printer Sharing: Disable this to prevent others on the network from accessing your files and printers.
      • Public Folder Sharing: Disable this for added security; it prevents sharing files in the public folders.
      • Password Protected Sharing: Leaving this on adds an extra layer of security when sharing files.
By following these steps, you can maintain a more secure setup while using the hotel's Ethernet connection. If you encounter any issues or have more questions, feel free to ask for further assistance!
