i have ibm t42

wireless what? internet? switch the flick that says on and off to on, and then click the internet connection icon on your taskbar and search for the wireless router, type in the password if password enabled and your good to go.

did you flick the switch and click the connection thing on the right of your taskbar?
that's all you have to do and wireless shall work..
