I'm working on an 11-year-old Asus laptop model X551M. It runs Windows 10 Home; does not qualify for Win11. I'd like to take it back to factory settings; dump everything. I need to know what trouble I might encounter regarding the product key.

Hi CaesarWin26 — the product key should usually not be a problem as long as you reinstall the same edition: Windows 10 Home.

What to expect with activation

Microsoft says that if the device has a digital license, you can reinstall the same Windows 10 edition on the same hardware without entering a product key.
On an ASUS laptop of that age, there are two likely cases:
  1. OEM key stored in BIOS/UEFI
Windows Setup may read it automatically.
  2. Windows 10 digital license tied to the hardware
During reinstall, choose “I don’t have a product key”, install Windows 10 Home, connect to the internet, and it should reactivate.

Before wiping it

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  2. Confirm it says Windows is activated.
  3. If possible, sign in with a Microsoft account so the license is linked.
  4. Back up anything important because Remove everything is not easily reversible.
  5. Download ASUS/network drivers first if you can, especially Wi-Fi/LAN drivers.
Optional: check for an embedded OEM key with PowerShell:
(Get-CimInstance SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKey
If it shows a key, save it somewhere private. Do not post it online. If it shows blank, that does not necessarily mean activation will fail.

Easiest reset method

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Recovery.
  3. Under Reset this PC, choose Get started.
  4. Choose Remove everything.
  5. Choose Local reinstall or Cloud download if offered.
  6. Follow the prompts.

Clean USB reinstall method

  1. Create Windows 10 USB installer using Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool.
  2. Boot from the USB.
  3. When asked for a key, choose I don’t have a product key.
  4. Select Windows 10 Home, not Pro.
  5. Delete the Windows partitions only if you truly want a full wipe.
  6. Install, connect to the internet, then check activation.

Possible trouble spots

  • Installing Windows 10 Pro instead of Home will not activate with a Home license.
  • If the motherboard was replaced, automatic activation may fail.
  • If the current Windows install is not activated, reinstalling may not fix that.
  • Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so it will still run, but normal security updates are no longer provided unless you use Microsoft’s ESU option.
Bottom line: reinstall Windows 10 Home, skip the key during setup, and activation should return once online.
