The shared memory you see in dxdiag is automatically set by the dynamic windows manager (dwm). If you've done a hardware upgrade, then:

1. Turn off Aero (switch to Classic or Basic theme)
2. Uninstall the video driver and reboot
3. Install the (new) video driver for your new card and reboot
4. Update DirectX
5. Turn Aero on

Intel Pentuim 4! 3GHZ
2gb of ram
GeForce 9400 GT 512Mb!

In Dxdiag i see TOTAL MEMORY 1266MB! 757 MB shared and 512 MB dedicated!

There is no way to reduce the amount of dwm shared RAM. You shouldn't worry about it as it will be used only if you open too many windows, like too many. e.g. My ATI has 1 Gb memory, dxdiag shows me 4 Gb total that can be used by dwm, but my task masnger shows it just 1,79 Gb of my 8 Gb RAM used.
