How do I make the shadows under windows/boxes bigger, like in Mac OS X? Is there a registry tweak? Do I do something with Style Builder?

Solution
To increase the size of shadows under windows or boxes in Windows to resemble the effect seen in Mac OS X, you can adjust certain settings. Windows does not provide a direct option to change shadow size like macOS, but you can achieve a similar effect with third-party tools or by tweaking some settings. Here are a few approaches you can consider:

Using Third-Party Tools:

  1. WindowBlinds: Stardock's WindowBlinds allows you to customize the appearance of Windows, including shadow sizes. This tool provides a variety of themes and customization options, including shadow sizes.
  2. Aero Glass: This tool can be used to apply transparency effects, including different shadow sizes, to the Windows interface.

Here are a few approaches you can consider:

Using Third-Party Tools:

  2. Aero Glass: This tool can be used to apply transparency effects, including different shadow sizes, to the Windows interface.
  3. Style Builder: Windows Style Builder can be used to create custom visual styles for Windows. While it doesn't have a direct option to change shadow size, you can create custom visual styles that might include larger shadows.

    Modifying Registry Settings:

You can tweak registry settings to adjust some visual aspects of Windows, which might indirectly affect the shadow size. Here's how you can try this:
  4. Access Registry Editor:
    • Press Win + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
    • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics.
    []Modify BorderWidth:
    • Look for the BorderWidth entry.
    • Double-click on it and modify the value. Increasing this value might increase the border size and indirectly affect shadow size.
    [
    ]Modify PaddedBorderWidth:
    • There is also a PaddedBorderWidth entry—adjusting this might impact the shadow size.

      Important Note:

      • Backup Registry: Before making any changes to the registry, it's crucial to back it up in case you need to restore it later.
      • Experimentation: Adjusting Windows visual styles can be tricky and might not always yield the desired results. Different versions of Windows might react differently to changes.
      • Third-Party Tools: Using third-party tools is often simpler and less risky than delving into the registry.
Unfortunately, Windows doesn't provide a straightforward option like macOS to adjust shadow sizes. You might need to experiment with different tools and settings to achieve the desired effect.
