Is it possible to use the fonts I can get in Office and the character map in other programs?

I would like to use the fonts I can see in my computer using the character map and programs like office word.
I assume they are true type fonts but I can't find them?
I have a 3d drawing program that accepts some fonts that show up when clicked on and offers the chance to go to others but where are the fonts I use in word?

Most programs including office pull their fonts from C:\Windows\Fonts. If your drawing application requires them to be in some special directory just copy from the the fonts directory.

I have found that directory and had to mess around with it, copy and paste a text file out of it and to another directory before my program recognizes it?
It looks as if they are zipped into files somehow?
