Windows 7 LCD or Video Card?

I've been running windows 7 on my laptop (Dell XPS 1530) for about 6 months and its been working well. Today I used my computer and it was fine, came back a couple hours and turned it on and nothing is appearing on the screen

The backlight is working and i can tell the screen is turning on, just no image. Plugged it into an external monitor and it works. BUT it will only allow me to display in 800x600. Under display it says Generic non-php Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter."

At first i thought it was the LCD thats busted, but this makes me think its possibly the video card..any suggestions?

If it is the video card is there any way to improve the resolution on the external for the time being?

Many thanks
