Okay, so for some reason my media player crashes every time I try to play an MKV, but it'll play flv and rmvb. When I try to open a MKV, it just says that Media Player has stopped working for some reason.

I'm working with build 7100. Would upgrading to the RTM fix this?

Oh, and I'm using the K-Lite Codec Pack Mega for the codecs

Solution
It seems like you're encountering issues with playing MKV files on your media player while other formats like FLV and RMVB play without any problems. Here are some insights and potential solutions for your situation:

Issues with MKV Playback:

  1. Codec Pack Compatibility: The K-Lite Codec Pack Mega you're using might not be fully compatible with the MKV files you are trying to play. Different containers like MKV require specific codecs to be decoded properly.

    Potential Solutions:

  2. Update Codec Pack: Before considering a complete system upgrade, try updating your K-Lite Codec Pack Mega. Visit the official K-Lite website to ensure you have the latest version that includes the necessary codecs for MKV playback...

  3. DirectShow Filters Check: Confirm that the DirectShow filters for MKV playback are correctly configured within your codec pack settings.

    Upgrading to RTM:

    • Build 7100: This build of Windows 7 is a pre-release version (Release Candidate). Upgrading to the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) version could potentially resolve compatibility issues, including those related to media playback.

      Considerations:

    • Backup Data: Ensure you have a backup of your important data before upgrading the operating system to prevent any potential data loss during the transition.

      Final Thoughts:

Before proceeding with the upgrade, ensure you have exhausted all options regarding your codec pack configuration. Upgrading to the RTM version might address the issue, but it's essential to address the root cause of the problem first. Feel free to make the necessary adjustments and attempt to play the MKV files again after updating the codec pack. If you encounter any further issues, consider upgrading to the RTM version as a potential solution.
