Microsoft has initiated the automatic rollout of Windows 11 version 24H2, marking a significant phase in its update strategy. This update is being automatically downloaded and installed on eligible devices running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, versions 23H2 and 22H2, that are not managed by IT departments.
Users will receive notifications when the update is ready for installation and can choose a convenient time to restart their devices. However, once the update has been downloaded, there is no option to cancel the installation. To delay the update, users can pause updates for up to five weeks via the Windows Update settings.
Microsoft has applied safeguard holds to prevent the update on devices with known compatibility issues, such as those with certain ASUS devices, Auto HDR enabled, or running specific applications like Dirac audio software and Easy Anti-Cheat.
This automatic update approach aims to ensure that users benefit from the latest features and security improvements. However, it also raises concerns about user autonomy and the potential for unexpected disruptions. Users are advised to check their device compatibility and manage update settings proactively to mitigate any issues.
