When I first plugged in my microphone, it popped up an annoying message asking what it was. I told it that it was a microphone and that was that. The next time I plugged it in, the same window popped up, so this time I clicked "do not show this message again." Everything was fine until I rebooted my computer.

Now nothing at all happens when I plug in my microphone. The computer is unaware that it exists. I need that annoying popup back, but there doesn't seem to be an option anywhere. Is there a way to bring back all the messages that I have "do not show this message again"ed away?

Solution
When you encounter issues with device recognition after dismissing a message in Windows, you can revisit these settings to re-enable notifications for the specific device. Here's how you can potentially resolve the problem:
  1. Check Device Manager:
    • Open Device Manager by pressing Windows Key + X and selecting Device Manager from the list.
    • Look for your microphone under the Audio inputs and outputs or Sound, video and game controllers section.
    • If you see a yellow exclamation mark next to your microphone, right-click on it and choose Enable.
    []Notification Settings:

    • Windows typically manages these notifications through the Action Center settings.
    • Go to Settings -> System -> Notifications & actions.
    • Scroll down and check if there's an option related to device notifications or device setup. You might be able to re-enable notifications for your microphone here.

    ]Reset Device Warnings:
    • You can try resetting the device warnings through the Registry Editor. Please be cautious when modifying the registry.
    • Press Windows Key + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
    • Navigate to the following key:
      Code:
       HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoPlayHandlers\UserChosenExecuteHandlers
    • Look for any entries related to your microphone and delete them to reset the autoplay settings.
    []Reconnect Microphone:
    • Disconnect the microphone, restart your computer, and then reconnect the microphone to check if it's recognized properly.
    [
    ]Reinstall the Microphone Driver:
    • If none of the above steps work, you might need to uninstall and reinstall the microphone driver.
    • In Device Manager, right-click on your microphone and select Uninstall device. Then, restart your computer and let Windows reinstall the driver automatically. By following these steps, you should be able to reset the autoplay settings and potentially resolve the issue with your microphone not being recognized by your computer. Remember to back up your system or create a system restore point before making any changes to the registry.
