Dowloaded ISO, burnt to DVD. Trying to install on Virtual drive using MS Virtual PC. Gets as far as starting "Expanding Windows Files (0%) and thats it. Tried burning another DVD of same image, exact same problem. Downloaded new ISO image, burnt new DVD at slowest speed, exact same problem.

Posts seem to suggest drivers etc could be problems but pretty crap installer (doing custom install not upgrade) if that is the case and it doesn't bother telling you! Thought W7 was meant to be a huge step up from the vile Vista?

It seems like you're facing an issue with installing Windows 7 on a virtual drive using Microsoft Virtual PC, where the installation process gets stuck at "Expanding Windows Files (0%)." This can be frustrating, especially after trying different DVDs and ISO images. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve this issue: 1. Check System Requirements: - Ensure that your system meets the minimum requirements for running Windows 7 on a virtual machine. 2. Virtual PC Configuration: - Check the settings of your Virtual PC. Make sure that it has enough resources allocated (RAM, CPU cores, etc. to run the installation smoothly. 3. Use a Different Virtualization Software: - If the issue persists, you can try using a different virtualization software like Oracle VM VirtualBox or VMware Workstation Player to see if the installation completes without any problems. 4. Enable Virtualization in BIOS: - Some systems require virtualization to be enabled in the BIOS settings for virtual machines to work properly. Check if this feature is enabled in your BIOS settings. 5. Check ISO Integrity: - Verify the integrity of the ISO files you downloaded. You can use checksum tools to ensure that the ISO files are not corrupted. 6. Try Installing from a USB Drive: - Instead of using DVDs, you can create a bootable USB drive with the Windows 7 ISO using tools like Rufus or the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. 7. Update Virtual PC: - Ensure that Microsoft Virtual PC is up to date. Check for any available updates or patches that might address compatibility issues. 8. Install Virtual Machine Additions: - After successfully installing Windows 7, install the Virtual Machine Additions or Integration Services to improve performance and compatibility with the virtual machine. As for your comment about Windows 7 being a significant improvement over Windows Vista: - Windows 7 was indeed well-received as a more stable and user-friendly operating system compared to Windows Vista. It introduced several enhancements and performance improvements over its predecessor, making it a popular choice among users. If you continue to experience issues with the installation, feel free to provide more details or specific error messages for further assistance.
